About Brevay

Founded in 2023, Brevay is a sustainable cycling brand based out of Seattle, Washington.

Brevay is a play on the word, brevet, which is a randonneuring event. Randonneuring is a form of long-distance, non-competitive cycling where participants ride predetermined routes within specified time limits. It emphasizes self-sufficiency and camaraderie, rather than speed or winning.

Like our name, our team wants to create a brand that invites more people into cycling, in a welcoming, fun, and less pretentious way. Especially women and other underrepresented voices that have historically been excluded in the cycling community. We still believe in building products that perform well - but we’re doing it differently.

Brevay was born out of our founder’s graduate school research that demonstrated a threshold of stiffness needed for performance in cycling shoes - stiffness beyond that was a marginal gain that was unnecessary for the performance of 99% of cyclists. In cycling shoes, carbon fiber has long been the marker of performance with the long standing ethos that the stiffer the shoe the better for performance. This finding flipped that thinking, opened the door to other materials, and created the opportunity to create a more sustainably built performance cycling shoe, one built without carbon fiber.

Through our journey of creating our first cycling shoe, we’ve found other material innovations that have unlocked the opportunity for apparel innovations and expanded our product vision from just shoes to an entire apparel product line.

This ethos has defined how we want to build our broader brand and community - and now we need a few marketing experts/ creatives to help us make that vision a reality.

Our team

We are a small, scrappy, part-time team with backgrounds in product, engineering, apparel design, partnerships, and business operations.

As we prepare to launch our first product line in 2026, we’re looking to add two roles initially that will help make sure our products and vision are brought to life and shape the identity, voice, and cultural impact of our brand.

Note: We want to bring on individuals, not an agency for these two roles. A few factors have gone into this decision - namely, limited funding and because we want folks that know and love cycling, are passionate about our vision, and are able to work with us long term to bring the brand alive. You’ll be helping to set the tone for the brand and we want you to feel excited to be a part of what we’re building.

The roles

We’ve learned a lot since we first launched the company and built our community and products. We believe that we are looking for two creatives to help us re-architect our brand and tell our story. We are posting these roles in tandem, because we want to bring them on at the same time to ensure there is alignment in brand and creative direction for long term success. We have consulted experts to help us think through these roles, but anticipate the exact structure will evolve as we have conversations and learn more.

Creative Director

We are looking for a mid to senior level brand expert to help us rearchitect our brand before we launch. We envision this role being a paid one month-ish contract that transitions to an advisor with equity in the company. While we have the vision for where we want the brand to go, we want someone who will push us and the vision in the direction that will best support the company and our future customers.

Scope of work

  1. Brand positioning and storytelling (help refining mission, vision, and values)
  2. Visual identity support (guidelines, social templates, mood boards)
  3. Tone of voice / messaging / one liners (for web, social, community)
  4. Marketing assets (graphics, launch campaign concepts)
  5. Website / product copy direction/ support

Proposed Deliverables

  1. Refreshed logo and typography (might require work with external designer)
  2. Updated brand guidelines deck (including one liners, mission, vision, copy guidance)
  3. Mood board and guidance for social
  4. Launch campaign concept
  5. Kickstarter campaign concept

Who we’re looking for

  • A proven brand builder with experience in brand strategy, creative direction, or cultural marketing (preferably in lifestyle, sports, or sustainability-driven companies)
  • Passionate about cycling, sustainability, and community driven brands
  • A visionary storyteller who understands how to turn values and mission into powerful narratives that resonate with our consumer
  • Experienced in shaping brands from early stage to scale, ideally with launch or category-defining experience
  • Deeply connected to culture (cycling, outdoor, design, fashion, sustainability, or adjacent worlds) and able to translate those insights into brand relevance
  • Strong leadership skills, you can inspire and guide both internal teams and external creative partners
  • A self-starter who thrives in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment eager to take on exciting and challenging work and is comfortable wearing many hats
  • Ideally located in Seattle or the PNW - most work can be done remotely, but we’d love to have several in person meetings to collaborate and work

Compensation

We are a small startup with a limited amount of funding to launch our first product. We plan to raise more money through a Kickstarter and another round of fundraising and after that plan to bring on the founders full time and potentially other team members - along with a larger marketing budget.

The equity and compensation for both roles will depend on the experience level and engagement level agreed upon. That said, we recognize that everyone is in different seasons of their career and life and if you’re looking for a large cash comp and project budget, we unfortunately do not have that to offer right now.
